Health Tips

Ways to Stay Healthy

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

Drink only bottled or bottled water, or carbonated drinks in bottles or cans.   You can make water safer by using a "absolute 1-micron or less" filter (available at camping supply stores) and by adding iodine tablets to your filtered water.

The CDC has the following reminder:  Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it.   Eat food, and fruits and vegetables that have been thoroughly cooked or that you have peeled yourself.  Do not eat foods from street vendors to minimize your risks of bacteria and parasites.

Don't go barefooted, and try to keep your feet clean and dry in order to prevent funguses and parasitic infections.  Don't swim in fresh water, including the Nile River (salt water is generally safer).  Try not to handle animals such as monkeys, dogs and cats as a way of avoiding bites and minimizing your risks of rabies and the plague.

More detailed information can be found at the CDC web site regarding health issues to northern Africa.
